IPOH: The parish exhibition at the Bernadette Centre of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Silibin here is a treasure trove of information about the church’s history and its roots.
The large exhibition area shows pictures of the church which started as a small wooden building and how it was built up. The exhibition also portrays the Lourdes’ experience, information about St Bernadette’s life, and the many sons and daughters of OLOL who have turned to the religious life.
There is a section about the teaching of catechism, a display of old Latin bibles, priests’ vestments, altar linen, reproductions of ancient religious artworks and the various items used in the celebration of the Eucharist.
As one enters the Lourdes centre, a big cross bearing a relic of the ancient wooden cross from Jerusalem, stands facing the door with the Word of God open before it. Behind this is a scale on which a globe of the world hangs in balance with the bible in the other. This is to denote how we should live our lives with the Word of God.
A basket of cards bearing some bible verses, is on display for visitors to take one, and to reflect on what has been given to them.
Visitors usually come in and pray for a short while before proceeding to the rest of the exhibition area. The various images of Mary as she appeared all over the world are also displayed.
The Bernadette Centre is the brainchild of OLOL parish priest Fr Bernard Paul. Its opening was on Oct 6 with a blessing and thanksgiving Mass celebrated by the Bishop of Penang, bishop Antony Selvanayagam, and followed by a fellowship dinner concert and open house. The centre is cherished by all parishioners at OLOL who have worked hard to make it a reality. The parish exhibition is on until Dec 8, open every Wednesday and Saturday from 7.00am till 9.00pm, and from 8.00am till 12 noon and 7.00pm till 9.00pm on Sundays.
The Lourdes Experience, in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes, is held every first and third Saturday from 9.00am till 1.00pm at the parish. Everyone is welcome.
Many groups from all over Malaysia and even Singapore are coming to Silibin for the Lourdes experience.
