PARIT BUNTAR: The parishioners of Our Lady of Good Health have chosen Pentecost as their first special event of the year. This is part of their effort to deepen their discipleship through a spirituality of communion.

“There is one word which sums up the story of Pentecost — unity. We are celebrating our being and becoming church. It is a day when we are re-empowered to change from being fearful to confident, from an “I” mentality to a “we” mentality.

“As scripture in the Acts of the Apostles says it was only nine o’clock in the morning when the Holy Spirit was poured out on everyone and all the believers began to talk each in his own language proclaiming the good news,” said parish administrator Fr Francis Xavier Selvarajoo.

There were a few activities leading towards the special event which were supported by the whole parish. Among the activities were the Novena Prayer to the Holy Spirit from May 22 till May 29 at BECs and half an hour praise and worship session before the Mass. There was also a colouring contest for the children during their catechism classes.

At the same time, the church was decorated with ‘doves’ to symbolise God’s messengers and witnesses of peace as well as two large kites. A red carpet was laid from the church entrance to the sanctuary. On Pentecost Sunday, the parishioners were encouraged to wear “Pentecost-coloured” dresses for Mass (shades of red, yellow).

During the offertoy, the BECs offered seven red candles as a symbol of unity and enlightenment. The BECs also presented Birthday Cards.

For this special event, the BECs had invited Catholic parishioners who had left the church and encouraged them to participate in this special event by offering an offertory gift during the Mass.

At the end of the celebration, Fr Francis Xavier congratulated and thanked the various organisations in the parish for their committed support in trying to turn their parish community into another little corner of heaven.

After the Mass, Fr Francis Xavier cut the Church’s birthday cake. Then there was a photo session with the parishioners. —
