ALOR SETAR: A Passover meal was celebrated at the parish of St Michael recently. It was attended by the participants and facilitators of the Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study programme.

The celebration started at 4.30pm with the singing of Hevenu Shalom (Peace be unto you). The participants went around greeting and introducing themselves to each other. The Seder Meal then ensued.

The Seder meal consisted of all the food the Israelites had before their exile from Egypt. The meaning and symbolism of each and every action was made clear by the commentator and the reading taken from the Bible.

One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘hiding of the matzah’ — the Jewish elders played this game with the children. In this case, the celebrant hid a piece of matzah bread and the participants had to look for it. The winner then had the privilege of negotiating something in return for the bread.

As the evening drew to an end, there was a dancing session. Everybody danced to the Havah Nagila. All present enjoyed themselves immensely, “You could feel the participants radiating with joy,” said the Alor Setar facilitator, Suzan Marshal.

This Passover meal was held to mark the transition between the Old Testament and the New Testament that the participants were journeying through. It was also to show a parallel between the Passover Meal and the Holy Eucharist. As one participant said, “It showed we belonged to the same family, that we are connected through the Israelites, to God.”

The Passover meal also spoke of the special relationship that the Israelites had with God, and that now through Jesus Christ, we Christians share the same special relationship with God.
