PENANG: Preparing the Manger is the theme for the Parish Advent Programme at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.
“Advent is truly a time of grace, a time of joyful anticipation as we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour — our reason for our existence. Most of all we celebrate God’s unconditional love for us.

“By His earthly incarnation He demonstrates a total commitment to the very core of humanity:  a commitment to its day by day routines and challenges, a commitment to humanity from the cradle to the grave and beyond.
“We are inspired to love and embrace this God of ours, our Emmanuel, and to share His love. We do this best by preparing the manger of our hearts for Jesus to be ‘born within us’ and to bring Jesus to others.

“In order to do this it was decided we reach out to children who are less fortunate as we remind ourselves of Jesus’ special love for children and his message to all of us “...Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them for to such belongs the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 18:15-17)

“Knowing how precious our own children are to us, we want to remember all children and celebrate the gift of children to this world of ours.”

So the focus of the Parish Advent programme will be children;

- Praying — daily intercessions for children in different situations from Nov 30 to Dec 28.

- Fill the Manger with “hay.” On strips of paper children can write down the kinds of deeds that they have done to show their love for Jesus These strips of paper will make up part of the “hay” for the manger.

- Fill the baskets with gifts from our children to children who are poor.

- Brighten the Star — we will reach out and share our joy and blessings with less fortunate children by fulfilling either individually or in groups their “Wish List”.

- ADVENT ROOM where all the activities will be coordinated. Bring to us your ideas and suggestions, fill it with life and enthusiasm.

As you bring joy to others, you will surely be blest with God’s special blessing for “...whatever you did to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.” Mt. 25:40

To help in our preparation and understand our Advent focus, there was a special sermon preached during Mass on each of the following days at 8.00pm in the church:

- Nov 27: Preparing the Manger by Fr Fabian Dicom

- Dec 4:  Let the children Come by Fr Francis Anthony

- Dec 11: Compassion, the heart of Christmas by Fr Simon Labrooy
