Raising funds to help the Rohingyas |

PENANG: The Parish Human Development Committee of City Parish held a coffee morning on July 15, 2007 to raise funds to help the Rohingyas in the Bukit Malut settlement in Langkawi.
Early this year, a fire broke out at Bkt Malut settlement where the Rohingyas stays. 225 homes were destroyed which left 1,067 people homeless, including 800 school-going children. This is the second fire occurring in their settlement.
Presently they are living in makeshift tents and surviving minimally on two meals a day of rice and canned sardine. Therefore, with the help of the Penang Office of Human Development (POHD), it is City Parish PHDC's intention to bring to them one good meal of fresh vegetables and chicken.

About RM1,500 is needed to buy food supplies to feed over 1,000 of them. The funds collected will be used for this purpose. PHDC will buy the chicken, rice, and other necessities for them to cook a good meal, and in solidarity with them, will sit together to enjoy the meal.
The coffee morning held at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, RM1144 from the coffee morning sale and another RM430 cash donations from well wishers.
Many non PHDC members chipped in to help in the coffee morning. Lots of food were available like nasi lemak, fried tom yam bee hoon, spaghetti, popiah, chapati, tomato rice and so on.
The food and other expenses like plastic bag, paper plates were sponsored by well wishers. Many parishioners patronised the stalls.
