IPOH: The Redemptorist Community of the parish of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) recently celebrated the Golden Anniversary of their establishment in Ipoh, as well as the Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee of Fr Patrick Massang CSsR. To mark the dual celebrations, a fellowship dinner was held at the parish hall on Nov 14. Many came from near and far to celebrate the occasion. Also present were fellow Redemptorists from Singapore.

Throughout dinner, the crowd was entertained by the Young People’s Choir. One event which got the crowd cheering was when the priests were invited on stage to join in a dance. The crowd later watched a slide presentation of a brief history of the early Redemptorist priests in Ipoh. Also mentioned was the great influence of the early priests which resulted in many vocations in Ipoh. The highlight of the evening was a simple cake-cutting ceremony by the Redemptorist priests and brothers. Following this was the singing of the Redemptorist’s theme song Viva.

By special request from the crowd, Fr Patrick Massang CSsR sang a couple of songs as well. The Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer) was founded by St Alphonsus Liguori in 1732. As with all religious orders, the Redemptorists began to reach out to other parts of the world, including Asia.

Besides priests, the Redemptorist Community also has Religious Brothers. Bro Bernard Heaney CSsR, who was one of the pioneers of the Ipoh community, gave a brief account of the Redemptorist mission in Ipoh. “It was in the early 1960s that Fr Stan McGrath, Fr Kevin Whiting and I were selected to be pioneers of the foundation (in Ipoh) with Fr Stan as Superior,” explained Bro Bernard. Later a house was purchased at No.31, Tambun Road.

This house, which belonged to the French Tekka tin-mining company, came to be known as Mater Domini. At Mater Domini, the congregation in Ipoh grew; besides the Masses, many were also attracted to the Novena Devotions. The parishioners were from various backgrounds and language groups — which was in line with St Alphonsus’ vision of making the mass available to everyone. By 1972, the Redemptorist Community moved to Ipoh Garden — the present premises. It was in April that year when the new church, named after Our Mother of Perpetual Help, was blessed and opened by the late Archbishop Gregory Yong. — By Felicia G Alexis
