CAMERON HIGHLANDS: An annual retreat cum outing for the Children’s Liturgy Of the Word (CLOW) of the Church of St Anne was organised in Cameron Highlands from May 26 to 28 at Rainforest Apartment.

Some CLOW members of Sacred Church, Kulim and Church of Nativity, Butterworth also attended the retreat.
Sr Regina Cheah, IJS facilitated the retreat. With her wealth of experience and knowledge, she taught the group to appreciate the Holy Spirit and how to pray, mainly through meditation using their five senses while making full use of the Bible for references. It was an eye-opener for many.

According to her, knowing and desiring the Holy Spirit are two different aspects. The desire for the Holy Spirit comes from the heart and is of utmost importance in enhancing our relationship with God.

Everyone was encouraged to set a time best suited daily for meditation so as to get close to God and to grow spiritually they need to find time to meditate.

Sr Cheah led them through some premeditation exercises: to focus on their breathing and to focus on hearing the sounds of the surroundings without analysing them.

Then she emphasised the immensity of God’s love — which is the greatest love story. “God so loves us that He sends us His Son. The Son so loves us that He dies on the cross. The Holy Spirit so loves us that He reveals God’s love to us.”

The retreatants were told that meditation is an event, which involves the mind, the will and the emotion. When we meditate, we listen to the inner ear, to the depth of our being. When meditating on Bible verses we are encouraged to know the context and the sequence, to listen with the heart what the biblical writer has to say in his heart and not merely listening to the words. Lastly, when reading the Bible the focus should be on others, not ourselves.

The homily given by Fr Charles Chin at the Eucharistic Celebration on Pentecost Sunday at the Convent made the CLOW members roar with laughter at his humorous tone of voice and gestures but the message was certainly profound. The participants were told to be brave and positive like the apostles on the first Pentecost day. The “applications” of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in life is of vital importance to witness to the living Christ.
