KEDAH: Sungai Petani Love Squad leader Jo-Lynn D’Oliveiro said they had a successful play around the theme of Lending a Hand at their parish of Christ the King earlier this year.

The play, which touched on the ‘Creation Story’ in Genesis 2, illuminated vividly that man was created by God to be in close relationship with Him and with one another and it was vital to live out this purpose by helping each other.

“We successfully conveyed the message that all of us had to reach out and lend our hands to others, especially those who are in need. We also portrayed the stark consequences of not doing so.”

Reviewing the play and other activities held at Christ the King Church, Jo-Lynn said the Love Squad comprising seven members also sold t-shirts and distributed bookmarks and flyers to get the message of lending a hand across to the parishioners.

The SP Love Squad from Christ the King Church was among six parishes from the Northern region which attended the Lenten Campaign post-mortem cum appreciation dinner organised by the Penang Office of Human Development (POHD) at the Pusat Keuskupan Katholik in Penang recently.

Other members were from the Immaculate Conception Church, Pulau Tikus, City Parish, Penang, Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Balik Pulau, Church of Risen Christ, Air Itam, and Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kulim.

Some of the challenges cited by members of the Love Squads were lack of support from parishioners, short period of time to prepare for the activities and lack of commitment from the youths.

Success stories included visits to orphanages where members shared their lunch and gave gifts of cash to the less fortunate.

POHD event coordinator Susan Lim said a total of 28 parishes under the Penang Diocese were involved in the Lenten Campaign activity and reviews had been conducted earlier in Perak.

Lim, who was emcee for the night, said the committee appreciated the hard work and effort put in by the love squad members and thanked everyone who had participated.
