BATU GAJAH: During each of his pastoral visits to the parishes in
the Penang Diocese, Bishop Antony Selvanaygam made it a point to celebrate Mass with his parishioners. It was no different at the parish of St Joseph, Batu Gajah during his pastoral visit.
The Mass he celebrated not only was part of the Golden Jubilee of the Diocese of Penang but was also his Silver Jubilee Episcopal Ordination. A total of 150 parishioners attended the weekday Mass. In his homily, he spoke at great length on the preparation for the Diocese Golden Jubilee Celebration.
Like the people in the times of Jesus, there were many who followed Him. There were those who listened and followed what He said and there were also those who just wanted to follow Him because of the miracles that He performed. So, if we want to listen and be a true follower of Christ, we would then need to live out our Christian duties not only on Sundays but all the days in the week. The Eucharistic celebration allows us to listen to the teachings of Christ, and the receiving of His body during communion binds us with Him.
Participating in the Eucharistic Celebration is a unique experience of our bond with God as individuals, but once we leave, we are blessed and we need to share this experience with others. The first people we meet the most are our family members and they are the ones that we need to share this experience with.
Priority in family life has changed and we look at happiness and success at the expense of religion. Children look at parents and imitate them. Do we give Jesus a chance to work within our families? So family prayers are important and this will lead our children in knowing Our loving Father who is in Heaven.
From our family bond, can we then reach out to our neighbours and those around us. If we fail to see Jesus in our neighbours then we have failed to see Jesus.
Before he ended, he advised all to evaluate themselves as children of God and it is therefore the role of priests and Bishops to remind us of the call of Jesus.
At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, the parishioners presented their bishop with an anniversary cake and a gift. This was then followed with a pot-luck gathering where the parishioners had the opportunity to be with their Bishop.
