BUKIT MERTAJAM: The St Michael’s League (SML) of the Church of St Anne recently visited a home. The project was headed by Peter Sylvester together with 10 members.

A week before the project was held; the committee members visited the home and enquired on what items were most needed. The home, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh caters about 45 mentally challenged people from the age of 4 to 45. The caretakers listed some daily use products, such as dry food and drinks and items like diapers, soap, etc.

Notices were then placed in the church so that parishioners could donate the items for this project. Many items ranging from rice, biscuits, milk powder, canned food, diapers, shampoo, toothpaste, etc were collected.

After the Sunday Mass, about 10 SML members together with their families visited the home with the items.

Malliga, one of the caretakers has been working for five years since the home began its operation. She is assisted by full-time Indonesian and Burmese female workers. “Sometimes school students come and help us on weekends,” she said.

“We make porridge most of the time, as the children here need to eat soft food. Some of them are immobile and we need to carry them. It’s a challenge to work here.”

After presenting the items and cash donation of RM500.00 (donated by SML members), the members bade farewell to the children and left.
