Three priorities for City Parish in 2009 |

PENANG: “The Parish Assembly provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the pastoral life and activities of the Parish,” said Fr Michael Thoo, parish priest of City Parish, to his parishioners who gathered for the assembly last month.
He also talked about the importance of BECs and hoped that the parish will continue to build BECs in line with the Diocesan Pastoral Thrust.
Before Fr Thoo’s speech, Joyce Lee, the PPC secretary, gave a sharing of the Word of God based on the Diocesan slogan ‘May we all be one’ (John 7, 21). She said that as Jesus prayed “Father, may they be one”, we have to respond to his prayer by not being one in heart (emotion) only but also one in soul.
“In Acts 4, 32,” Joyce said, “It is stated that the apostles were ‘one in heart and spirit’. When we are called to be one, we are also called to be a communion of communities.”
John Dass, the Parish Animating Team (PAT) chairperson gave a review of 2008 plans and activities. He also pointed out the SWOT that the parish did for 2008. He then said that BECs in the parish had been restructured — into the North, South and Central zones.
Christine Choong from PAT then took over to facilitate the group discussion. The four questions given were: What to do for City Parish?, How to inspire the BECs? What can the parish give? and What help can each of us give?
The Pastoral Thrust for 2009 was presented by Peter Foo, BEC Coordinating Team chairman and Fr Dominic, assistant parish priest.
Fr Dominic said that in line with the Diocesan Pastoral Thrust 2009, City Parish, Penang, will focus on these three priorities: a) Fresh elections for BEC Core Teams and Parish Service Groups; (b) Prayer and sharing the Word at all meetings; and (c) Formation ie retreat for leaders.
Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, who was present, stressed on the importance of the sharing of the Word of God. He was dismayed to find that at most BEC gatherings he attended, he found that when it came to the Word of God sharing, everybody was quiet.
“What does this mean?” he asked, “You let Jesus come in and you don’t speak. Why? If you don’t speak, it is like Jesus is dumb — Jesus has not spoken to you through the Word.”
Bishop Selva said firmly that when we read the Word of God, we must remember it is God speaking to us, therefore we must allow him to come into our hearts. In that way, he said, we will then be able to respond by sharing the Word.
The Assembly ended with Fr Thoo’s expression of thanks to all who were present and the Bishop imparted his blessing to all.
