ALOR SETAR: St Michael’s parish had a triple celebration on Sept 28 — the Feast of St Michael the Archangel, the Sacrament of the Eucharist and Confirmation. Preparations for the parish feastday began with  a novena, which was celebrated by different parish priests from other parishes.

It was parish priest Fr Jude Miranda’s project in organising and extended his invitation to some priests from other churches to come and share their personal and spirit building talks in order to ensure that the parishioners of St Michael prepare themselves and are committed to welcome the event. These preparations was indeed a new experience for all of us in this parish.

It was an invitation given out to everyone to participate in the feastday, as St Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of the parish. The Novena began from Sept 19 till Sept 27 culminating in the parish feastday on Sept 28.

The Organising committee urged all members of the BECs to come in full force to support this second parish event so that, together they can help promote the value of “Belonging and Unity”. The themes for the nine days ranged from Family, Vocations, BEC, Married couples, Youth, Peace, The Sick, Priesthood, Country and Community, which were preached by nine different priests.

The priests were Fr Maiccal Sinnapan from Sacred Heart of Jesus Kulim, Fr Marshall from Immaculate Conception, Pulau Tikus, Msgr Stephen Liew and Fr Simon Ee from St Anne’s BM, Fr Neville from Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and there were also priests from the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese — Fr Terrance Thomas from the Church of St Paul the hermit, Fr Mitchel Anthony from the church of Jesus Caritas and Fr Frederick Joseph from the Chapel of Kristus Cahaya.

There were also a total of 24 candidates who received the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation. These candidates came from the surrounding churches and chapels in the northern region. Joining them in their journey were their parents, godparents, teachers, relatives and friends who came from far and near to witness, pray with them and bless them.

Bishop Antony Selvanayagam was the main celebrant for the Feastday. Concelebrating were Fr Francis Xavier from Nibong Tebal, Fr Frederick Joseph, Fr Mitchel and parish priest Fr Jude celebrated the Feastday Mass. During the homily, Fr Frederick spoke about discipleship — as looking to the Lord, listening to His words, sharing the Kingdom of God with others and to live in communion with one another. He delivered his homily in three languages — English, Tamil and Bahasa Malaysia.

Fr Jude then thanked Bishop Selva for his presence during this auspicious day and to all the priests who  took time-off to come and spend their time and valuable experiences with them. A cake  commemorating the triple celebration was brought out for the bishop to cut together with the 24 candidates. Everyone then adjourned for fellowship, photography session with the candidates and a sumptuous meal in the church compound.
