SUNGAI PETANI: It was a three in one celebration — Parish Eucharistic Assembly (PEA), Confirmation and Mother’s Day held fiesta style outdoors in tents at the Church of Christ the King in Sungai Petani recently.

Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, who celebrated the Mass, said that the Parish had taken the diocesan theme of Deepening Our Discipleship Spirituality of Communion seriously by preparing the people to know and understand the Sacraments better.

“I commend the parish for taking the initiative to have an exhibition on the seven sacraments, organizing talks and showing movies on the Sacraments, culminating in the Eucharistic Assembly.

“It is through the Sacraments that we are able to touch God through the person of Jesus Christ. The Sacraments are God’s gifts through Jesus and every time we worthily receive them we are coming in touch with Jesus and we must be convinced about this by our faith.”

He told the gathering of about 1,000 people that in order to experience or to touch Jesus, they had to first prepare themselves well before Mass, Baptism or Confirmation. Referring to the Gospel of John 15: 1-8 on the vine and the branches during his homily, Bishop Antony added that Christians must be closely rooted to Jesus. This was so that they would be able to take up the challenge to live like Him, daily emulating his behaviour and doing the things that He would want them to do.

Several tents were put up for the outdoor event in the church grounds, and the Mass was concelebrated by parish priest Fr Michael Dass, resident priest Fr Nelson Joseph and Fr Jude Miranda from Alor Setar.

Sixty-two candidates including 16 Sabahans, four adults and Form 5 students of the parish received the Sacrament of Confirmation. In conjunction with the three-month PEA an exhibition on the seven sacraments was jointly done by the various church BECs, whilst catechism children had quizzes and colouring competitions on the sacraments. The winners received prizes at the end of the day’s celebration.

Bishop Antony also paid tribute to mothers for their selfless care of the family and he prayed for blessings on them. Each mother received a rose. The four-hour celebration, which drew some outstation visitors, ended with fellowship and dinner. —
