SUNGAI PETANI: The message of the Cross embracing Jesus words: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up His Cross and follow me,” was admirably delivered by 12-year olds during the days leading up to Passion Week at Church of Christ the King.

It was a message for all times and seasons not only for the Passion Week — that is if we want to lead a victorious life we must follow Jesus no matter what the circumstances. Straying away and ‘doing our own thing’ during a time of crisis will only get us into deeper trouble.
The play re-enacted Jesus suffering and crucifixion but was made current, so children from the catechism classes numbering some 300 who witnessed it could relate to the message.
It opened with the scene where Jesus was brought before Pilate who handed him over to the people to be crucified. The olden day scene paralleled into a modern day journey of the Way of the Cross where daily Jesus is sentenced to death and crucified through the sins of people and their denial and turning away from Him.
The story laid out in three parts was portrayed by three main characters David, Mr Wilson and Marian who try to solve their own problems by keeping Jesus away.
David played by Elwin Chandran showed a young boy’s deep and heart wrenching struggles when his father dies leaving him feeling abandoned by God whom he trusted so much. He blames God and turns away from him. Thereafter his life goes downhill as he turns to drugs and leads a life of vice.
Similarly Mr Wilson, played by Wilson Emmanuel blames God after he was declared a bankrupt during the recent economic downturn although he had been a faithful Catholic serving in the Church. He seeks out the God of Prosperity and other idols including resorting to black magic to restore his riches but to no avail. The third character Marian played by Ashwini Sanjeevi, showed the frustration of a student, an SPM dropout who blamed Jesus for her failure and threatened to hurt him the way he had brought shame and disgrace on her.
Other members of the cast played the roles of Simon and Veronica who try to help and comfort David, Mr Wilson and Marian and bring them back to the Church but they refuse to listen.
In all that is happening Jesus is seen trying to reach out to the three lost souls, falling heavily at times with pain and pity for them as they wander aimlessly until one day the trio confront Jesus angrily, blaming and accusing him for their suffering. During the confrontation David takes out a knife and vengefully tells Jesus “See this knife, I will commit suicide before you” and as he falls to the ground Jesus also falls and dies.
David miraculously survives and the three of them hear the voice of Jesus who tells them how much he loves them and has a special plan for each of their lives. They then recognize Him and cry and beg for mercy.
Finally everyone was asked to make a commitment to deny self and follow Jesus as “The Way of the Cross, is the only way to Victory; All other ways lead to suffering and death,” the narrator concluded. The cast comprising some 10 children and the audience who were visibly touched by the drama rose silently to sing I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, a fitting finale bearing hope in the newly resurrected life. —
