IPOH:  St Michael’s Church has come up with two prayer books, a family prayer book and The Rites for Roman Catholic Death and Funerals, available in English and Chinese.

The books at RM1 will be available outside the church after Masses.

Parish priest Fr Michael Cheah in launching the books, presented a set to the chairman of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and funeral service Francis Fernandes, and Chairperson of the BECs, Datin Kanmani Christopher.

Fr Cheah  said the family prayer book was to encourage all families to pray together at least once a day. Although it was once the norm to say daily prayers together as a family, the present generation of families rarely have the opportunity to do so, due to one reason or another.

The family prayer book outlines daily prayers led by each parent in turn and the response from family members from Week One to Week Five.

For each day, there is a penitential rite, opening prayer, scripture reading of the day, reflection, prayer of the faithful, the Our Father and the Memorare.

There are also special prayers such as the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the first Friday of each month.

Other traditional prayers include the Chaplet to St Michael,  prayer before and after meals, prayer to the guardian angel, The Angelus, Hail Holy Queen, Salve Regina, Regina Coeli, Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes, and Prayer to the Holy Spirit.

Fr Cheah said families should always find time to pray together despite various reasons or activities which may pull family members away from this daily prayer time together.

“The reasons may be valid but if we are not careful, these reasons will eventually cause the erosion of both our family unity and spiritual values,” he said.

Often Catholics want to know how to pray together as a family, which is why the book was published..
The official liturgical “Prayer of the Church” is ideal, and the Rosary or various other Devotional prayers to Saints are helpful.

“All members of a family should be able to generate a keen interest in prayer and the experience of praying together,” he said.

He thanked Sr Theresa Chew FDCC, who translated the text into Chinese to benefit the Chinese-speaking parishioners, and Fr Frans de Ridder CICM for his support.

The second book, on The Rites for Roman Catholic Death and Funerals,  will now be used instead of the older version. As usual, the Rites outline the preliminary preparation of the body and coffin for the funeral,  preparation for death, vigil prayers for the Dead, and funeral rites including those for children and infants. Two new areas however, are found in sections four and five. These are on the committal at the crematorium and interment at the Columbarium and special prayers for the Dead.
