IPOH: Every year, big-hearted volunteers give up their Sunday morning activities to help raise money for Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church during its food and fun fair.

This year, the number of volunteers sizeably increased, as parishioners from other churches from Kuala Lumpur, Kajang, Teluk Intan, and Taiping, and friends from Singapore, Tapah and Cameron Highlands joined in to do their part.

The volunteers, in addition to those from the parishes of OMPH, St Michael’s Church and Our Lady of Lourdes, gave that extra touch of excitement to what would otherwise have been a normal food sale and games. They put their heart and soul into the process of making their contributions as special as time and resources would allow.
Many came as early as 6.30 am, on Aug 19, to either dress up as clowns, prepare their stall for music entertainment, handicraft, food, vegetable and flower sales, games, and to make flower corsages, rosettes and bouquets for visitors when they arrived.

To many who came to the food and fun fair, it truly marked the spirit of volunteering amongst the people who gave their time to help others, and to become a “bridge” of unity across racial and parish barriers.

Volunteers Christina and Albert Kee and Lawrence and Rosalind Yeap from the parish of Kristus Aman, in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur came to offer their home-made pasta, ikan bilis sambal, and achar. They also had specially designed wooden framed pictures of Mother Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help,Our Lady of Lourdes, and Mother Most Admirable on sale.

Louisa Fu and her group from St Anthony’s church in Teluk Intan, offered Chee Cheong Fan and Yam Cake, which were really going like hot cakes. “We just want to help the parish in their fundraising,” said Christina Kee.

A big group of Sarawakian army servicemen from the Second Rangers Camp in Tambun, offered their famous Sarawak Laksa, one of the all-time favourites. Raymond a/k James Tawok, said their families had prepared 300 bowls of the steaming spicy delicacy at just RM4 each. Needless to say, their stall was one of those which finished first.

Parishioners from St Mary’s Chapel in Kampung Tersusun, took up three stalls, offering ice-kacang, cendol, pasembor, rojak and nasi lemak. Having just celebrated their feastday Mass, where they also donated food for the people, they were happy to contribute to another worthy cause.

To those who came out after the 8.00am Mass, it was like a super Sunday brunch. With so many different types of appetizers and main courses it was hard to know where to begin.

There was an abundance of  fresh flowers and vegetables from Cameron Highlands.

Inside the parish hall, there was  a jumble sale of clothing, books, electrical items, cameras, glassware and shoes.
OMPH parish priest Fr Joseph Stephen CSsR, and assistant parish priest, Fr Philip Lai, CSsR, helped to promote food and vegetable sales, whilst Fr Rudy Wong, CSsR, mingled with the crowd and volunteers.

St Michael’s Church parish priest Fr Michael Cheah, came to support the food and fun fair and visited each stall, buying several items. For the children there were face and hand painting, hair sculpturing with coloured gel, and sand art.

Two zany clowns danced with anyone who wanted to dance, whilst parish council chairman Joseph Loh offered free hugs to anyone who wanted them. He was quickly followed by several parishioners who stood near the emcee with open arms. Many of the takers were pint-sized old ladies, much to the amusement of others.

With tickets sold out and  exceeding the expected target of RM65,000, many visitors had to buy items using cash instead of coupons. At the close of the fun fair,  a Thanksgiving Mass was held for volunteers and visitors.
