PENANG: Mary, the model of deepening our discipleship was the focus of the feastday celebrations of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows from Sept 11 to 14.

The celebrant for the Triduum was Fr Simon Labrooy with Fr Nelson Chitty as the main presider for the feastday.
On the first day of the Triduum, Sept 11, the theme was Youth — guided by God’s Word.

Fr Labrooy urged everyone to try to understand the youths. “Do not judge them, instead be compassionate to them and help them to grow,” he said. “You were all once youths who were rebellious and influenced by the way of the world too, so you should be understanding towards them.”

He then mentioned that Jesus was always kind to the young ones and he helped them see their self worth. Jesus cultivated a relationship with the young ones and this is what gives meaning to life. Likewise, he encouraged that we too should build a relationship with the young.

The second day Triduum Mass focused on the sick with the theme Strengthen in faith by God’s Word.

Drawing from the gospel reading of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, Fr Labrooy explained that Mary’s visit showed that she was genuinely concerned for the elderly people. Although she herself is with child, she made the journey to help her cousin who is about to give birth.

To care for the sick and elderly, said Fr Labrooy, we need lots of love, kindness and most of all patience. Mary has it all and in the gospel, we also see how Jesus cares for the sick. To him, nobody is a burden.

The family was the focus on day three of the triduum.

Fr Labrooy said that it was love that made us a family. If there is no love in the family, there is no family at all as it is love that gives meaning to the family.

“As a family and as individuals, we are all called to be be rooted in the Word of God,” he said.

The feastday Mass on Sunday was in three languages and celebrated by Fr. Nelson Chitty. The theme was Community — Obeying God’s Word like Mary. Fr Michael Thoo and Fr Dominic Santhiyagu were the concelebrants.

Fr Nelson informed the congregation that it is having the same identity that makes us a community. It is through baptism that we share this one common identity.

“If we were baptised in Christ, shouldn’t our lives then reflect the value of Christ?” he asked, “We need to recover this identity of ours so that we can remain faithful and obedient to God.”
