Welcoming and sharing Jesus with everyone |

PENANG: The Church of St Francis Xavier celebrated its feastday over three days from Dec 3 to Dec 5. The theme for the celebration was A Mission to Solidarity. On Dec 3, the theme focused on youths. The Eucharistic Celebration was celebrated by Fr Andrew Stephen on Dec 4, and the focus was on ministries and there was a Praise & Worship session with Word-sharing.
Sunday, Dec 4 was the main feastday celebration. Bishop Antony Selvanayagam was the main celebrant for the Eucharistic Celebration. In his homily, Bishop Selva said that as we began Advent, we also celebrated the feast of St Francis Xavier and the feast of the Immaculate Conception. These saints remind us how they welcomed the person of Jesus Christ and shared Jesus with all.
This will enhance the celebration of Advent. “In the second reading, St Paul spoke about the present Jesus Christ,” said Bishop Selva, “St Paul said that everything the people of Israel looked for had been found in the person of Jesus. Jesus came for the whole world. We are privileged to believe in him and thus now it is our turn to share Jesus.” He urged us to share Jesus through the way we live, through our families and through the communities.
This way, we will allow people to see that we are believers. “St Francis Xavier understood that Jesus was not for him alone. That’s why he travelled from his world — to Japan, China, India — to bring Jesus to all. He was bringing the Good News of Jesus to the people. We should imitate St Francis Xavier. We should not lock Jesus Christ in our hearts but we should share Jesus everyday in our daily lives.
The way we live will witness to people that we are Jesus’ disciples,” he said. Bishop Selva said that in the Gospel, St John the Baptist had said he would decrease and Jesus would increase. He said that this should be the sentiment of all of us. We believe in Jesus, we share Jesus, and one day we may be gone, but Jesus will always be around. There was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament after Mass, followed by Benediction and fellowship. — By Lucia Lai
